It may all look the same to an outsider, but as you travel through the vast beauty of the landscape, you begin to lose yourself in the fractal variation of one bay or inlet that is crucially different to the inlet or bay before it, and the names you pass are more a story than a map: Random Island, Come by Chance, Witless Bay.įive hours from St John's, a ferry leaves Farewell for the island of Fogo (which is not really Newfoundland, I am told) and a road leads through the villages of Seldom, Little Seldom and Joe Batts Arm, all the way to Tilting. ![]() “That’s not pine,” he said (he seemed a bit shocked). ![]() “It looks like Canada to me,” I said to one dissenter and pointed out a hillside of pine trees that was only a Mountie short of a postcard. These days, the highway is long and the traffic serene: everyone drives like a lady or like a Canadian. It was a long time before they got roads. Their accents were preserved by the salt Atlantic air, in tiny isolated communities along the shore. The Irish talk like they came from Dungarvan. 'It looks like Canada to me' So you can't call them "Newfies", and you can't call them Canadians, but they will let you call them Irish – unless their ancestors came from Devon, but those ones are easy to spot because they talk like people from Devon. When boats set out from the West Country of England, they stopped along the south coast of Ireland to take on extra crew – and some of these Irishmen jumped ship on the other side, and stayed. Many of these redundant fishermen had names like Doyle, or Walsh, or Ryan – some of them descendants of men who worked the Grand Bank, centuries before. In 1992, a moratorium was called on cod fishing and those modest wooden houses started to empty and fall – in a way that is almost picturesque – back into the water. But if you look at the sweet-seeming villages of small wooden houses that cluster along the shore, it is clear that, whoever made all the money, it wasn’t the men who risked their lives on the high seas. From the 1620s on, the Portuguese, the English, the “Spainyards” as one man calls them, with their factory ships, the Japanese and, yes, also the Newfoundlanders themselves hauled them out of the ocean. We ate all the cod, or nearly all of them. ![]() You could say that what they got was ridicule (the “Newfie” joke is the “Paddy Irishman” joke of Canada) and what they lost – you have only to look to sea to remember it – was the cod. The questions of what they got in return for that pride and what they lost are still live in Newfoundland. Some of these debts were incurred during the first World War, when Newfoundland, a dominion of the British empire, was proud to send soldiers to the trenches. The first financial crisis was in 1933, when the island had to dissolve its parliament in return for a bailout from Britain. Debt, payment and colonial plunder are recurring themes. Others do not remember the pre-confederation days with great warmth, however, recalling a time when the fishermen of the bays were hopelessly indentured to merchants in the capital, St John’s. The ‘straight Irish’ town of Tilting, on Fogo island. Newfoundland was tactically vital to the allies, and its fate a matter of international agreement, so never mind the vote, Malone argues the island’s independence was effectively “sold” to Canada in return for the cancellation of Britain’s debt after the second World War. Greg Malone, who wrote Don't Tell the Newfoundlanders: The True Story of Canada's Confederation with Canada, says people have brought the book into cemeteries to read aloud over their parents' graves, to tell them they were right all along. "Canada", in this context, is not just a euphemism for "boring", "law-abiding" or "flat", the island only voted to join the confederation of provinces in 1948, and that vote was split 51 to 49 per cent – a cause of some abiding bitterness among the baymen, the former fishermen who live along these rocky shores. Newfoundland is not Canada, as the people there never tire of telling you.

Quicksand and Death of a Salesman had a lot of materialistic themes, whilst As I Lay Dying addressed the frailty of life. In most ways though, I felt as though they were all three completely different stories that addressed completely different things. I enjoyed reading all three of these works and in a lot of ways they were similar in the fact that all three were on the darker side of the literary spectrum. This alienation extends to neighbors as well, who also seem to misinterpret or simply cannot fathom the family’s actions. As a result of their many communication problems, members of the Bundren family live mostly alienated from each other, whether willfully like Addie or Jewel, or unknowingly such as the case with Cash, Anse, Dewey Dell, or Vardaman, or unfortunately painful like Darl. When these guesses turn out to sometimes be wrong, misunderstandings start to ensue. Other than Darl, who knows Addie’s and Dewey Dell’s hidden secrets through intuition, the characters can only guess at their motivations, beliefs, and feelings of themselves and others. Although most readers are privy to the characters’ thoughts and emotional responses, essentially none of the characters seem to adequately expresses his or her dilemmas, needs or desires to others. However, the characters of this novel do not communicate very effectively with one another. ![]() Faulkner’s use of multiple narrators seems to underscore one of his primary themes, which is that every character is essentially isolated from the others. I found that Quicksand and Death of a Salesman were very similar in this aspect.Īs I Lay Dying brought a handful of darker themes to the literary table that in my opinion were vastly different from the previous two works of Quicksand and Death of a Salesman. Materialism is a very much a recurring theme in this work it over-shadows most, if not all of the characters actions and I believe that the audience is made aware of this. The work is set in 50’s capitalist America, where in fact the idea of the American Dream had only just begin to gain momentum Miller’s criticism of the American Dream resides the most in the presentation of his character’s valuations of products being higher than those things more pertinent to survival, with one character being more of the prime focus of this flaw, the stories’ protagonist, Willy Loman. Materialism has come to be a sort of modern phenomenon, something that possibly began due to the American Dream ‘ which is an idea that is heavily criticized through implications in this play. ![]() In Arthur Miller’s work ‘Death of a Salesman’ is a modern tragedy one that incorporates both the tragic genre presented in theatres and books for centuries as well as essences of the modern world that we live in. Subsequently I also found very similar themes in Death of a Salesman. Because it was filled with things such as Chinese carpets, oriental silk, long bookshelves, many illustrious depictions and “furnished with rare and intensely personal taste,” I when I read this I automatically assumed that she would come to expect a certain amount of “class” of her surroundings and the people around her. The very first moment I saw materialism depicted in Quicksand was on the first page, when I started reading, where it described Helga’s room in Naxos. ![]() Helga encountered many problems with her materialistic and spiritual values, and in the end, I believe that it finally got the best of her. This fixation on materialism and belongings, also interesting spiritual views carried on throughout the work. In Quicksand, there were many occasions that depicted materialism and spirituality. I read these three literary works the traditional way by reading them out of the anthology and also doing some research online. ![]() The patient should report signs of impaired circulation (skin coldness, numbness, tingling, discoloration, and changes in mobility) and is taught how to care for the cast or splint and the correct use of assistive devices (slings, crutches, walker). The patient is evaluated for fat embolism after long bone fractures, for infection in open fractures, for excessive blood loss and hypovolemic shock, and for delayed union or nonunion during healing and follow-up. All procedures and related sensations are explained, and reassurance given. Pain is assessed and managed with prescribed analgesics and noninvasive measures. Vascular and neurological status of the limb distal to the fracture site is monitored before and after immobilization with traction, casting, or fixation devices. Stabilizing the patient on a rigid board, with full spinal protection, is necessary until x-ray studies reveal the spine is stable. Unnecessary or improper movement may injure or even transect the spinal cord. ![]() Open reduction with internal fixation may be required and is performed when the patient is judged to be hemodynamically stable.įirst aid for fractures of the spine requires extreme care in moving the patient. Hip fractures require gentle handling and immobilization to prevent displacement of the fracture, aggravation of bleeding, or disruption of a pelvic hematoma. ![]() ![]() If the bone does not heal, a weak electric current applied to the bone ends (bone stimulation) may promote healing. Pins are placed in the bone, and the bone ends are held in place by pulleys and weights until union occurs. Skeletal traction may be used instead of a cast or external fixator for certain fractures, such as femoral shaft fractures. The bone may then be immobilized by external fixation until the wound heals. When the wound is clean, a sterile dressing is secured by a bandage. If the area is grossly contaminated, mild soap solution may be used provided it is thoroughly washed away with generous amounts of sterile saline. The wound is then washed and cleaned with sterile saline. Initially, the open fracture should be covered with a clean or sterile dressing and the fracture site immobilized. In open or compound fractures, bleeding must be arrested before the fracture is treated. Afterwards the limb is restored to complete function by physical therapy and exercise. The bone is kept in position by a cast or splint until union has taken place. Radiography should be used to identify the fracture and the exact position of the bone fragments. Applying a cold pack to the fracture site and elevating it above the level of the heart may limit pain and swelling. Immediate first aid includes splinting of the fracture site and joints above and below it to limit further movement and displacement. Signs include loss of the power of movement, pain with acute tenderness over the site of fracture, swelling and bruising, deformity and possible shortening, unnatural mobility, and crepitus or grating heard when the ends of the bone rub together. In a fracture due to muscular contraction, the bone breaks from a sudden, violent contraction of the muscles. In a fracture due to indirect violence, the bone is fractured by a force applied at a distance from the site of fracture and transmitted to the fractured bone, as a fracture of the clavicle by a fall on an outstretched hand. In a fracture due to direct violence, the bone breaks at the spot where the force was applied, as in fracture of a crushed tibia. In a pathological fracture, bones break, spontaneously and without trauma, due to certain diseases and conditions like cancer, osteomalacia, syphilis, and osteomyelitis. Fractures may be due to pathologies, direct or indirect violence, or muscular contraction. Into the husband's subconscious is a tangible and real version of his once living wife, quiet and martyr-like that she was. Riding just below it all is a sense of something truly creepier. I found this short story to be incredibly unsettling and disturbing. The wood burning brightly and fragrantly in a fireplace becomes for him a stench that even lingers in his mouth, making him sick. The crispness in the air is more clearly felt, the ability to go for a stroll around the grounds more inviting, popping into the local pub or to simply pass the time in his living room - all are free for him to do without any guilt. He feels a sense of freedom, unburdened by the chains of her subtlety that he felt for so long, and he begins to enjoy life. It was just the undercurrent of reproach, mingled with suffering nobly born, spoilt the atmosphere of his home and drove him to a sense of furtiveness and guilt.Following a quick bout of influenza turning into pneumonia, Midge passes away. He could not remember Midge ever losing her temper or quarreling. Nagging wives, like mothers-in-law, were chestnut jokes for music-halls. Instead, her very nature is so thoroughly passive aggressive that she simply seeps into her husband's guilt, compelling him to obey to her every meandering subtle prod. A fairly downtrodden husband is married for over twenty years to Midge, who doesn't quite nag or even pick. ![]() The collection that my husband picked up was published in celebration of Daphne du Maurier's 80th birthday, complete with wonderful illustrations by Michael Foreman. " The Apple Tree" follows the actions of a man who, following the death of his neglected wife, suspects her spirit inhabits an old apple tree in his garden which he resolves to remove, but never gets around to doing so. Here's what drew me in a few weeks ago from Wikipedia: My husband, the kind soul that he is, surprised me tonight - after deciding to stop into one of the libraries we hadn't been to in a while, he found Daphne du Maurier's Classics of the Macabre and surprised me after dinner with it, opened to "The Apple Tree." I tried to find it in a couple of the regular places I go to, but to no avail. I picked up the collection of short stories in Don't Look Now, which are selected by Patrick McGrath (my review of his book Asylum can be found by clicking here), but I've been eager to read "The Apple Tree" which is not included in that collection. Thankfully, I've read a few short stories in the past day that I now feel comfortable to post tonight for this challenge. Highly recommended for children ages 5 – 8 as a read-to and as an independent read.Part of the reason why I've been wanting to read Daphne du Maurier is because I signed up for a challenge hosted by Chrisbookarama a while ago.and I've been feeling a touch guilty every time I look at the beautiful button of Du Maurier on my sidebar. The Apple Tree’s Discovery can be used as a Tu B’Shvat or Earth Day resource. Watercolor illustrations are whimsical and colorful and support the story perfectly. The authors thank Rabbi Avi Weiss for having exposed them to this story in a Midrash workshop. This book is beautifully written by famed storyteller and teacher, Peninnah Schram, and Rachayl Davis, also a storyteller and educator. The message is well delivered in an age-appropriate fashion. ![]() Based on a Jewish folktale, this lovely story encourages readers to believe in their unique gifts and strengths, rather than long to have someone else’s abilities or assets. ![]() Like many young children, the apple tree covets the gifts that the other trees have been given. The ending is a surprise twist and the book includes a practical activity, which will appeal to the reader. As the seasons pass, the tree discovers that it DOES have stars - just not the kind that other trees have. The tree asks God for stars, and in response, God tries to let the tree know how many other gifts it has already - including the ability to bear apples and provide shade. ![]() It particularly longs to have stars, since the other trees have stars that dangle and shimmer on their branches at night. I am not a huge fan of plain text lists, most of the time I tend to implement all the concepts in GTD, including Next Actions, Contexts and Projects, but having a lightweight task management system could be useful sometimes. The broomstick acts aggressively towards the cat, but is much more obsessed about cleaning, so you can leave some pawprints on the floor to distract it. ![]() Freddy must catch three mouses in order to proceed. They’re so certain about their bastion (the cat won’t be eating cheese to get to them, after all) and its guardian, so they even tease Freddy, peeking from cheese holes just to tease the cat. They even have a guardian – a living broomstick which keeps an eye out for any hunter, also successfully cleaning the floor at the same time. It’s a one big mouse hive, some sort of a paradise for them, and the mouses surely do mind if there’s a cat visiting their domain of pleasure. It would be relatively easy, if not for the large spider who lives in that very room and strongly disagrees about Freddy’s position about obtaining the ferns.Īnother room presents us with a undeniable proof that this is indeed a wholeheartedly mouse-loving community – it has one huge chunk of cheese which fills the whole room. You enter various rooms (five in total) through various windows and get presented with challenges inside them.įirst off, there’s a room where you must get three ferns from the top of a bookshelf, which is, for whatever reason, really important for Freddy. As the result, someone opens a window from time to time just to throw some garbage at a poor cat, meanwhile ignoring the many mice running left and right on the moving clotheslines (which you can catch and eat for bonus points). As mentioned before, the neighborhood is quite troubled, if not gone completely nuts. But once you manage to successfully jump off the bins, there are windows. You can jump on a garbage bin so it won’t reach you, but there’s also a rival cat who tries to throw you out of the can. The game shows the dangerous life of an alley cat as it is – on the very first screen, there’s a dog running around trying to catch and eat you. Aside from featuring many random graffiti, which are a standard part of any city street, it also shows your high score and how many lives you have left. The design touch with the fence is pretty cool – it’s not just a part of the environment. The jumping physics are something you really need to get used to, but once you do, the game becomes easier to control. There’s a tall fence with garbage bins nearby for you to get past, in order to enter the building through one of the windows, which automatically open and shut. When the game starts, you see a screen where you can choose the difficulty (“Kitten” for Easy, “House Cat” for Medium, “Tomcat” for Hard and “Alley Cat” for Very Hard) and learn the controls (which is great if you don’t have a manual, pressing Ctrl + R to restart the game is not really an obvious choice for a modern player). ![]() Cassegrain reflectors add a curved secondary mirror to the classic design, which means they’re more compact. Are there any other types I should know about? While reflectors are generally better for viewing deep-sky objects (galaxies, nebulae and the rest), they may not offer such clear, bright views of nearer objects and planets. Reflectors don’t have this problem, but the mirrors may need to be manually adjusted, and unless you have a special eyepiece, the view will be upside down. However, they’re more likely to suffer from chromatic aberration, where bright objects – such as a star – appear surrounded by a halo of different colours. ![]() The tone of the film imposed similar limitations on the other characters, with occasional exceptions. He plays a very subdued and subtle character and so you only see a narrow view of his acting range compared to his other movies. I mainly watched this for Takeshi Kitano and although he delivered an appropriate performance, I think he was limited by his role. The movie has a somewhat film noir atmosphere and is artsy because it sketches things out but doesn't complete the picture, to a somewhat unsatisfying effect. As the plot thickens, the movie reflects the writer character's confusion, leaving just as much unanswered for the viewer. Compelled to investigate, the writer finds more questions than answers, and begins to get drawn into increasing uncertainty. Normally, I would assume this demeanor is a result of years of media training (and perhaps the wounded response to an unflattering interview or two). But Kutsuna’s star is only beginning to rise, having played key roles in a few Japanese television shows and movies before arriving in Hollywood in a way that has propelled many before her into stardom: via a superhero film, of course. Her portrayal as mutant Yukio in the Marvel superhero film Deadpool 2 put her on the map, and only time will tell where Kutsuna’s career will take her now that she has that coveted pedigree under her belt. Right at this moment, however, she’s on her way to the airport, having wrapped a non-stop press tour for the sequel to the Ryan Reynolds-fronted Marvel darling on everyone’s lips. Over the next half hour, Kutsuna and I discuss everything from placenta moisturizer to meditation and I get the impression that she chooses her words carefully not from a jaded attitude or guardedness, but because she is a careful, thoughtful person. She’s honest with her feelings about representing Asian women in an industry that either puts them in a box or disregards them entirely (in short: she’s not entirely comfortable), she’s open about her tendency to worry about the future (same), and she comes across as an entirely genuine individual trying to find her way in the world while staying true to herself. Superheroes-they’re just like us.īYRDIE: Congratulations on Deadpool 2. SK: To be honest, I don’t feel too comfortable…my voice doesn’t have to be everyone’s voice. I did grow up in an area where there weren’t too many Asians and I didn’t have any Japanese classmates so I did kind of struggle with that while I was in primary school. Shioli Kutsuna: I do really feel like everyone in Australia is more natural, organic, and they love the sun and they just, they let everything just happen naturally and if you get a tan, that’s fine, whereas I feel like Japanese people are more very controlled of the type of beauty they want.īYRDIE: Do you have any favorite Japanese beauty products that you love?
